Is This Intuition or Fear? Three Checks I Use in a Tarot Reading
Is This Intuition or Fear? Three Checks I Use in a Tarot Reading

The card is on the table and a fearful thought arrives
You turn over a card and a complete thought appears.
It may feel sudden. It may sound certain. It may also send your mind into a future scene where something has already gone wrong.
At that point, I use three checks.
For me, intuition feels present, empowering, and loving.
These words describe how I recognize my own intuition. You may experience yours differently. Use the checks as a way to explore what you notice during a reading and build a clearer relationship with your own signals.
Check one: Does the message bring you into the present?
Intuition gives me information I can meet now.
It may point to a feeling already present, a detail in the card, a choice available today, or a truth I can acknowledge in the current situation.
Fear often moves my attention into a future outcome. The mind begins writing the rest of the story before the reading has gathered enough information.
Pause and ask:
“What part of this message belongs to the present situation?”
Then return to what you can see.
Name the card, the question, the spread position, and one detail in the artwork. If you are reading for another person, include what they have actually told you.
For example, the Eight of Swords may bring a sudden thought about being trapped.
Bring the thought into the present:
“Where do you feel limited in this situation right now, and which choices can you already see?”
The question gives the person room to describe her experience and identify what is available.
Check two: Does the message leave room for choice?
An empowering message gives the reader or the person receiving the reading somewhere to act.
It can name a difficult pattern. It can acknowledge grief, uncertainty, anger, or a real limitation. It can also show the place where a decision, question, boundary, or next step belongs.
Ask:
“What choice does this message make visible?”
The choice may be small.
The Four of Cups in a career reading may invite someone to review an offer more carefully. The Queen of Swords may ask for one clear conversation. The Seven of Pentacles may suggest evaluating what has already been invested before deciding what comes next.
Your job is to offer possibilities from the cards and the question. The person receiving the reading remains the expert in her own life and decides what connects.
When I cannot find any choice inside the message, I slow down and look again.
Check three: Is the message loving in its delivery?
A loving message respects the person receiving it.
It can name a pattern, a hard truth, or a choice with consequences. The delivery leaves the person's dignity and authority intact.
Listen to the sentence before you say it.
Does it sound like a verdict?
Can you turn it into an open question or an honest possibility?
Try:
“This card can point to a boundary that has become difficult to maintain. Where does that connect for you?”
Or:
“I am noticing pressure around this decision. Which part of the choice feels most demanding right now?”
These sentences explain what you see and invite the person into the conversation.
Use the three checks with one intuitive hit
During your next reading, write down the first thought, feeling, memory, or sensation that arrives.
Then ask:
What part of this belongs to the present?
What choice does it make visible?
How can I express it with respect for the person receiving the reading?
You may keep the original message. You may find a clearer way to say it. You may decide the thought belongs to your own fear and return to the cards.
Each result teaches you something about how your intuition arrives.
Say what is happening
When an intuitive message feels useful, you can share the process in plain language.
Try:
“I am getting a strong feeling of relief with this card. The usual keyword points to restriction, and the feeling I am noticing moves toward freedom. How does that land for you?”
This keeps the interpretation transparent.
You are naming the keyword, the intuitive response, and the question that lets the other person decide whether the message connects.
The conversation gives you feedback. That feedback becomes part of how you learn to trust your own reading voice.
Build your own record of intuition
After the reading, write down:
The intuitive message
How it arrived
Which of the three checks it met
What the person said
What you learned about your reading style
Review the notes after several readings.
You may notice that intuition arrives most often as a feeling, a phrase, a memory, an image, or a clear sense of knowing. You may also recognize the thoughts that tend to pull you toward fear about the future.
That record gives your lived experience a place beside the card meanings.
Practice the checks in your next reading
Present. Empowering. Loving.
Those are the three qualities I use to recognize intuition during a tarot reading.
Write them at the top of your next journal page. When a message arrives, pause and run the three checks. Then speak the interpretation as one honest possibility and ask how it connects.
