There’s this subtle pressure that can sneak into the way we approach learning tarot. As if we’re supposed to move through the cards in a straight line, check off our keywords, and suddenly become a “real” reader. But in truth, tarot doesn’t work like that. Not really.

Tarot is a mirror. And just like any mirror, what it reflects shifts as you shift. The way you understand a card today will not be the same way you understand it six months from now..... because tarot card meanings evolve as you grow. Your lived experience, your intuition, your perspective, your stretch as a soul, it all evolves. And as it does, so does the way the cards speak to you.

Meanings Don’t Stay Still. Neither Should You

When students begin their journey inside High Priestess Tarot School, I often invite them to assign a single keyword to each card. Something that captures the essence as they feel it now. But over time, they start to notice other keywords emerging. New layers they hadn’t considered, deeper angles that feel more resonant as they grow.

Sometimes this shift comes from lived experience… grief, love, awakening, heartbreak. Sometimes it comes from watching how different clients respond to the same card, how different decks highlight different symbols, or how one reading changes everything they thought they knew. One moment you’re certain The Fool means fresh starts… and then one day, it means recklessness. Or trust. Or sacred surrender. Not because the card changed, but because you did.

Tarot doesn’t want you to memorize. The best readers meet their cards again and again.



Rigid Readers Burn Out While Fluid Readers Thrive

One of the clearest patterns I’ve seen over years of teaching is this: readers who hold rigid definitions tend to hit walls. Their readings get stale, their confidence shakes, and their relationship with the cards starts to feel like a test they keep failing. But the readers who allow meanings to shift… who make space for nuance, for discovery, for contradiction are the ones who fall in love with the process. They’re able to go deeper. They’re able to surprise themselves. They’re able to feel the magic of a reading, rather than trying to force it into a predetermined structure.

This is what keeps tarot alive.

Even revisiting a card you “know” can offer something brand new when you’re willing to see it with fresh eyes. A card journal you filled out last spring might land differently today. A client’s unexpected take on a card might unlock something you hadn’t considered. A keyword that once felt shallow might crack open with soul-level depth after a single life event. And the way you read can (and should) stretch to hold all of that.



Tarot Evolves Because You Evolve

If there’s a card that embodies this spiraling path, it’s The Wheel. Not because of its mysticism, but because of its predictability. Every time we cycle through something… joy, grief, loss, breakthrough we start to see differently. And so, the cards reflect something new. That’s not a failure of understanding. That’s proof of relationship.
